The Maryland Department of Tourism recently unveiled its new brochure on the Underground Railroad in Maryland, and four of the sites listed are in our area. Roedown Farm in Davidsonville is highlighted as the birthplace of William Parker, who escaped to freedom in Pennsylvania and later led the Christiana Resistance, a violent confrontation between abolitionists and slaveholders who had come looking for their runaways. The Maryland State House is mentioned as the site of hot debate over legislation governing slavery, black freedom, and the illegal activities of the Underground Railroad; and a listing of museums and research facilities includes both the Banneker-Douglass Museum and the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. Pick up your copy of the brochure at any of Maryland's Welcome Centers, or at the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau on West Street in Annapolis.
